It is difficult to get your point across to a customer who doesn’t give you the chance. They interrupt and start talking before you have the chance to finish or get halfway for that matter. . Here is a technique that is 100% absolutely guaranteed to work…most of the time.* Don’t stop talking. Don’t stop but do slow down. This is where you need a lower, slower voice. It will be more powerful. Offer a option in your more formidable and compelling voice that is difficult to refuse. Here is how it might sound. “Mr. Dunkin, I appreciate you may have something to say but I have not finished. Please let me do so and then I will be more than happy to take the time to listen to you. (Don’t wait for him to say ‘o.k.’, just pick up where you were before he started talking over you. When you have finished speaking, end with something like: “Thank you, Mr. Dunkin. Now I would like to listen to you.” When someone is trying to talk over you, they are attempting to control the conversation. No need to let that happen to you. *Most. No technique works at 100% If you steal one idea it is plagiarism. Take a lot and its research. This effective response to someone talking over you was ‘researched’ from Mel Robbins. She is the author of a popular book, ‘Let Them’, and hosts a popular podcast. I hope to add her as a contributing author to my next update of the book, “How Would Confucius Collect a Past-Due Invoice”. |
