Funny isn’t it, how you can often tell when a couple is going thru a break-up. One or both of them are dropping weight, going to the gym, changing hair color not to mention style and their overall presentation is….well, younger and better!

Let’s face it, some of us may have a product that is past its ‘best buy’ date and to put it back in the market with any chance of success calls for some hard work.

My wife Donna and I are making some life style changes (not a break up) that includes putting our house up for sale. Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been getting it ready for ‘presentation’. Painting and cleaning was involved but the most interesting aspect was ‘little stuff’ what I refer to as hygienic, like a light fixture in a storage area that was hanging loose. Fix it and nobody notices, don’t and it stands out. (Like personal hygiene: Take a shower, use your deodorant and nobody pats you on the back, miss it for a couple of days – people take note.)

I did a lot of ‘little stuff’ that made a difference and it didn’t take very long. Place looks great. So good, that I’m regretting putting it on the market, but the point is – why wait?

If you were going to sell your company (your department) would you really keep Sal in accounting or Debra at reception – or at least not take action to correct their less than stellar performance? Would you really allow several of your biggest customers to get lazy and lag behind on their payment terms?

If you knew you were going to be out of a job next week, wouldn’t you be taking steps to make yourself more marketable – right now?

Nobody wants to be on high alert all the time. It is stressful and eventually ineffective. Also, there is something to be said for being in a relationship where you can relax, be yourself and put on an old but extremely comfortable sweatshirt or housecoat.

Some of us are going to get a call to visit the H.R. department of a spouse who says, ‘sit down, we have to talk’, why wait? At worst, you end up with yourself, department or firm that looks so good – nobody will want to put it on the market.
